12/12/19 – Shapinsay Trip
To escape the world of politics for a few hours on election day, I led a trip with the Orkney Field Club to the island of Shapinsay. Shapinsay never disappoints, we had great views of a Buzzard, both male and female Hen Harriers hunting, a Sparrowhawk, Whooper Swans, Reed Buntings, Stonechats, Redwings, Fieldfares and lots of wildfowl at Mill Dam Reserve. We ended the day watching the local seals (selkies) and watching the sunset before getting the ferry home. I might add Shapinsay to my island trips for next year, its a good one for any time of year.
11/11/19 – Wildlife Sightings
There was much excitement here over the weekend as a Blue Rock Thrush was found in the quarry at Lamb Holm, I managed to catch up with it on Sunday and got a new lifer, lovely wee bird. Other birds around the quarry were Snow Buntings, a Kestrel and a Hen Harrier.
Later in the day, I counted 90 seal pups and had approx. 100 Barnacle Geese calling as they flew over me, a fantastic day out!
24/10/19 – Flotta Day Out
After a couple of days of wind and rain, myself and a friend went on an island adventure to Flotta. We saw the sunrise on the way over, and the sunset on the way back. Inbetween, there was lots of great wildlife to see while we enjoyed a lovely walk. The smaller islands are great places to see raptors – we saw Sparrowhawks, a Peregrine, Merlin and Hen Harriers, as well as lots of other great birds and the Porpoises on the way home were an added bonus.
13/10/19 – Wildlife Sightings
24 Grey Seal Pups counted on the Seal Pup Walk, lots of females hanging around still to give birth and at least 2 bull seals. Nice to see and hear the Long Tailed ducks back at Echnaloch Bay, Burray.
