Enthusiastic and knowledgeable Megan was very enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the birds and plant life in the Orkneys as well as other wildlife related issues. Although our walk may not have been at the best time of the year for birds, she made a real effort to point out and explain information about all wildlife. If we go back, we will ask her to guide us again.

A fantastic introduction to the flora and fauna of Orkney My wife, grown-up son and I had a lovely walk with Megan at Mull's head - Megan was great - she gave us fantastic introduction to the flora and fauna of Orkney - she was a great spotter and identifier of birds, animals and plants - she was personable and pitched the content and style perfectly for our group - we can't recommend Megan highly enough! - and we would definitely go out with her again - Andy, Sally and Will

Knowledgeable, experienced and friendly We had a lovely walk with Megan who really knew about the wildlife we encountered on our evening walk. She took time to ensure that we were comfortable and safe while walking and she had binoculars to loan to those who didn’t have them. Megan has a very warm personable approach and I will certainly do more of her walks when I return to Orkney.

Excellent field trip! I highly recommend Wild Orkney Walks - a small, locally owned conservation guide who is passionate about the nature of Orkney. My husband and I went on a Hidden Gem Short Walk to Gruf Hill in May. There were 3 others on our walk for a total of 6 including Megan. It was a truly enjoyable field trip! Megan shared her knowledge of the plants, animals, insects and birds - native species and invasive species. The outing deepened our experience of the nature of Orkney and was a highlight of our visit to Scotland. Would highly recommend an outing with Megan if you are in the area. It was exceptionally good value. We had a second outing scheduled with Megan which we had to cancel due to illness. I really appreciated how flexible Megan was. She even offered to reschedule with us - even though she had a busy calendar.

AN EXPERIENCE NOT TO BE MISSED! My wife and I had two very interesting walks with Megan during our short time on Orkney last week. Both were very well organised with plenty of useful information provided about what to wear, what to bring and easy instructions about where to meet beforehand. Although both walks were nearly three hours long, they were very easy going and capable for most abilities. Also, Megan is very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about all the wildlife in Orkney, which added much to the enjoyment of the walks. Therefore, I would have no hesitation in recommending these walks to anyone wanting to learn more about the flora and fauna of these beautiful islands – thank you Megan!

Great Tailored Bird Walk We were looking for a guided bird walk near Kirkwall that would fit with our cruise ship's port call there, and were very fortunate to find Megan. After correspondence back and forth before we left home, we settled on a plan and a price - very reasonable for several hours' private guiding! A last-minute shift in our start time was graciously accommodated. The morning was most enjoyable. Megan's knowledge of the local birds - and indeed other wildlife- was extensive, and she was able to show us a number of different habitats within easy walking distance of our starting point at the tourist bureau. This meant that we saw a wide variety of birds that we would not have found - or identified - ourselves. I would certainly recommend Wild Orkney Walks to anyone who wants to see and experience the wildlife of the Orkneys.

Evening Ring of Brodgar walk - 7 June 2023 After a fabulous week on Orkney with so many highlights I can honestly say that our evening Ring of Brodgar walk with Megan was one of them. Bird and plant life abounded, the views were wonderful and Megan was a fantastic, expert and friendly, host. I was recommended to go by family members who had been previously and I'm extremely glad I did so. - This is a superb way to see nature in Orkney within a small group.

Great day out in the sunshine I had an amazing day with Megan. Generous of spirit, great sense of humour, and superior knowledge to share. I had a short visit to the Orkneys, and Megan helped make it special. Thanks again - i've now got new shoes and should have bought them BEFORE I went to Flotta with you!! Take care, Helene

Highlight of our time on Orkney We were thrilled to find that Megan would take our group of three on a private wildlife tour. She fit the trip to our desires, asking if we had any special birds or wildlife we wanted to see. She sent us a preview of where we would go a few days before, even taking into account the road construction. Her knowledge of the natural world is incredible and she is able to relay it very well. Megan is always looking and listening. She pointed out Short-eared owls and brown hares that we wouldn't have noticed. We saw 36 species of birds, identified 9 different wild flowers and 2 butterflies. Our favorite time was at the Loons Listening Wall, followed by the Loons Hide. We sat in a peaceful setting and watched many birds with their young. This tour was truly the highlight of our visit to the Orkney Islands.

In the company of an expert naturalist Last week my friend and I took two wonderful walks with Megan. A day at Mull Head, and an evening at the Ring of Brodgar. At Mull Head we saw a large variety of birds, and with Megan’s expert eye saw a hen harrier and skuas we’d never have spotted alone. She is passionate and knowledgeable about plants and insects too. Megan is also delightful company, taking the wishes and needs of the group into account.

Brilliant Wildlife Walk

We had an Absolutely brilliant wild life walk with Megan! She is so knowledgeable and the walk was so informative. She is just so enthusiastic and interesting! Excellent day out!

Enjoyable Walk

My wife and I had a very enjoyable walk around Mull Head with Megan last week. Megan is an expert in her field and even though I have been watching wildlife for over 50 years I still learned from her. My wife isn’t as experienced as myself but she thoroughly enjoyed Megan’s help with identifying birds and animals.

Lovely Walk

Lovely walk around Mull headland on Orkney with a highly knowledgeable guide, Megan. We saw a excellent range of sea birds including Skuas and Divers. So good that walks are limited to small numbers which allows greater chance of seeing birds etc and chance to learn from Megan. Thoroughly recommended.

A Fabulous Day

Hidden Gem Short Walks

I had a fabulous day walking both of the ‘short hidden gem’ routes with Megan in early April 2022. Whilst I’m a keen walker, I know nothing about the plants and animals en route with my bird descriptions including “the one with the ninja mask” and “he had rosy cheeks and wee matching collar.” As a total novice, I valued Megan’s patient and non-judgemental approach to explaining Orkney’s wonderful array of wildlife and her flexible attitude allowed the two walks to be done together when the weather was descent. The walks provided a great variety of habitats, birds and flowers and, having Megan as a guide, meant I saw, identified and appreciated significantly more than I would alone. The Hen Harriers with the male pulling out a few of his best dance moves in the sky and the long tailed ducks in their finery were probably my highlights. I would highly recommend – time and money well spent.

Highly Recommended

My partner and I went on two walks with Megan during our holiday in Orkney – one was her regular seal pup walk near Burwick, and she also very kindly arranged a bespoke day on Hoy for us. We had hoped to glimpse the white-tailed eagles on Hoy – they were hiding, but we saw many other exciting Orkney species, due entirely to Megan’s local knowledge of the best observation spots and her superb eye for birds.
There were too many highlights of both walks to mention them all, but it was a real treat during the seal pup walk to see almost the entire grey seal life cycle – pups of all ages and many fascinating interactions between the adult seals (including mating to produce next year’s pups!). I was also very excited to see great northern divers and get excellent views of a female hen harrier hunting on Hoy – really special, since they are so rare down south. Megan also took us to Hackness (knowing my interest in cetaceans), where we were lucky enough to see harbour porpoises!
We would highly recommend a walk with Megan for anyone who wants to see Orkney’s wildlife. She has an amazing eye (I still don’t know how she spotted a peregrine while it was just a little dot on the skyline, or directed us to countless seabirds from a moving ferry) and her passion and expertise make her an engaging and informative guide. Thank you so much for your time, Megan – and for a glorious sunset at Rackwick. 🙂

Eye-opening Tour!

Excellent walk. It was informative and beautiful. Megan took time to point out fauna & flora and knew lots about everything we saw. Seals and dolphins were a highlight for us! I know so much more to watch out for on my next walk now. Highly recommend!!!
